EDF Workbench is a signed Windows preview for inspecting EDF, EDF+, BDF, and BDF+ recordings delivered by collaborators, CROs, or research platforms. It provides a focused, vendor-neutral review workspace while leaving the opened source recording unchanged.

Scope matters: this preview supports secondary viewing and research review. It is not represented as GLP or GxP validated, 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, accepted for regulated electronic records, or suitable for primary drug-safety decisions.

A source-preserving workflow

Work with the recording that was exported.

EDF Workbench reads supported recording and channel headers, applies stored digital-to-physical scaling, and presents each channel with its own documented sample timing. Viewing, navigation, presentation changes, and measurements do not rewrite the opened file.

  1. Keep an unchanged copy of the delivered recording and establish its provenance.
  2. Inspect recording information, channel labels, physical units, ranges, and sample rates.
  3. Review supported embedded annotations and keep new user notes in a separate sidecar.
  4. Navigate to an interval, verify the selected channel and time basis, then apply a suitable measurement or frequency view.
  5. Export only the review material required and verify it against the source and your established procedures.

Preclinical and nonclinical teams may exchange EEG, EMG, ECG, temperature, activity, trigger, or other telemetry-derived channels. Relevant research discussions can include seizure liability, sleep/wake behavior, neurotoxicity, CNS effects, and translational review.

These examples describe possible recording contexts, not validated EDF Workbench indications. File conventions, study procedures, species context, acquisition hardware, transformations, and organizational controls determine whether any particular file or output is appropriate for a task.

Evaluation checklist

Start with synthetic, redistributable, or properly authorized data.

Confirm authorization

Do not use sponsor, CRO, animal, personnel, or other confidential information unless your organization has approved the evaluation and handling.

Preserve provenance

Keep the original export unchanged and record the acquisition system, export route, transformations, and relevant study context separately.

Verify conventions

Confirm channel labels, units, scaling, sample timing, status channels, annotations, and vendor-specific conventions with the originating documentation.

Use established controls

Evaluate outputs against qualified tools and approved procedures. Treat preview behavior as something to test, not as regulatory evidence.
